Calendar Professional Training Workshops/Conferences Consultation Contact Us Counseling Methods Online Call or Email for current schedule Kathleen Adams LPC, RPT-M/S, Instructor This pass/fail class is designed to offer exposure to, not mastery of, the basic theories and practices of the pioneering therapists and movements in psychotherapy. It is designed for Certified Poetry/Journal Therapy (CPT) trainees who need to clear the Counseling Methods and Theories prerequisite requirement. This class is also popular with those who are interested in mental health and personal growth. The purpose of the class is to orient students to the theory and practice of the major schools of psychotherapeutic thought, starting with psychoanalysis and ending with the transpersonalists. The journey through the decades continues with weeks on the therapeutic thought represented by Adler, Jung, the cognitive/behaviorists, the humanistic/existentialists, family therapy, brief therapy, and expressive arts therapies. Weekly assignments include links to websites that contain excellent, clear, comprehensible information about the week's topic. Students are expected to spend 3 hours/week browsing through the websites, educating themselves on the weekly topic, including exploring links to the various sites. Assessment is made by a short (250 words) response paper each week that synthesizes key points in the reading and is submitted to the instructor and fellow students via an internet listserv. A final paper of approximately 1000 words will synthesize the process. The class follow two formats: one is 10 weeks in duration with a minimum of 3 hours per week expected in reading and discussion with other students. There is also an intensified format compressed into 6 weeks. Assignments will be distributed each Monday morning and each week's homework is due by email submission by the following Sunday evening. Final paper/evaluation is due one week after the last class. A certificate of completion will be mailed to each participant with email notification of satisfactory completion to the trainee's mentor/supervisor. Cost is $200 payable by check or MasterCard/Visa.
