This 2-year program begins in October 2006, and the application deadline is September 1. Here is your opportunity to study intensively and extensively with Kay Adams, through the convenience of the internet and your phone line. Enrollment is limited. Call today at 888-421-2298 or email KAdamsRPT @ aol.com to arrange a personal interview. Note: This is an academically rigorous program that requires commitment of time, energy, money, and focus. What is the Certified Poetry/Journal Therapist (CPT) Distance Learning Program? The Center for Journal Therapy is proud to offer both distance-learning and local professional training programs in journal and poetry therapy. The training programs culminate in the designation of Certified Poetry/Journal Therapist (CPT) or Registered Poetry/Journal Therapist (RPT). The educational prerequisite for the CPT program is a bachelors degree in any area; for the RPT, a graduate degree eligible for licensure in psychology, counseling, social work or a related field. The designations CPT and RPT are granted by the National Federation for Biblio/Poetry Therapy ("the Federation"). Kathleen Adams is approved by the Federation as a Mentor/Supervisor and is authorized to direct the training programs of qualified individuals. The Distance Learning Program is a 2-year, guided independent learning program that provides structure, accountability, supportive community, customized learning and advocacy. A monthly fee of $225 (sliding fee available) supports the trainee in achieving all or most of the hours required in four categories for the CPT designation. What is a Certified or Registered Poetry Therapist? (note: this information comes from the NAPT website, www.poetrytherapy.org) The CPT is trained to facilitate groups and work with individuals in developmental settings such as schools, libraries, recreational facilities and similar growth and development oriented organizations. The CPT may also work in a mental health setting as an adjunct therapist in cooperation with a primary therapist. In clinical settings, the CPT works under the clinical supervision of an RPT or other qualified mental health professionals. The CPT brings a unique background, blending love of literature and creative writing with an understanding of basic psychology and group dynamics. Although the CPT's training is geared to working in developmental settings with healthy populations, the CPT must be able to recognize the difference between "normalcy" and pathology, and must be able to determine when a distressed individual needs to be referred to another mental health professional. The RPT has trained more extensively and in greater depth than the CPT and works with more difficult and troubled populations. Because the RPT has previously earned an advanced clinical degree in psychotherapy, counseling, psychiatry or social work, the RPT is qualified to work with clients of all types in settings such as clinics, hospitals, prisons and similar institutions, as well as with mentally healthy populations. RPTs also work with individuals having adjustment problems brought about by developmental or life crises or disabilities. Training Requirements for the CPT All trainees in the Center for Journal Therapy Distance Learning Program are enrolled in the CPT training program. Those eligible for the RPT continue for additional study once the CPT is earned. The CPT is a 440-hour course of guided independent learning. Trainees with prior didactic, facilitation or peer group experience in poetry/journal therapy may, in consultation with the mentor/supervisor and by approval of the Federations Certification Committee, transfer in a total of up to 60 hours. Didactic: 200 hours Didactic learning consists of actual time spent reading books, attending workshops and lectures, and participating in other educational opportunities. Didactic learning requires written annotation. Facilitation: 120 hours CPT trainees must complete 120 hours of supervised facilitation, leading poetry/journal therapy groups. Facilitation hours require documentation through written case notes and session reports. Supervision: 60 hours For distance learners, the majority of supervision hours will take place on the telephone, with a smaller percentage of hours occurring through email correspondence. This highly individualized experience offers the opportunity to learn directly from a master teacher. Some supervision is done in groups by teleconference or at annual intensives, conferences and retreats. In the 24-month program, an average of 2.0 hours of individual supervision is included in the monthly fee. A monthly 90-minute group supervision teleconference is included in the program cost in the second year. Any supervision hours not used in a given month may be accrued and used later in the program. The current hourly rate for supervision outside of the regular program is $80. . Peer group: 60 hours Trainees are required to accrue 60 hours of peer group interaction. These are counted at actual clock hours and consist of two or more trainees gathering with a CPT or RPT to experience poetry/journal therapy as a participant. The local monthly training group (Colorado learners) includes a 90-minute peer group. Distance learners may be able to join peer groups in their communities. For distance learners, teleconferencing may be used for up to 10 hours of peer group. One monthly 90-minute teleconferencing peer group session is included in the monthly fee for the first year. Peer group hours may also be accrued at conferences, intensives and workshops led by CPTs or RPTs. Recordkeeping Trainees are responsible for keeping very good records of hours accrued in all training categories. Quarterly records are submitted to the mentor/supervisor.
