What is the Journal to the Self® Workshop?
The Journal to the Self workshop is a 12-hour course on how to keep a journal for personal growth, creative expression and life enrichment. It was created in 1985 by Kathleen Adams LPC, PTR, Director of the Center for Journal Therapy, Inc., and internationally known pioneer and expert in the power of writing to heal. The early years of the workshop formed the research base for Kathleen Adams' best-selling book, Journal to the Self, published by Warner Books in 1990. Tens of thousands of people have learned this easy, effective, empowering model of journal keeping through the Journal to the Self method. The workshop is adaptable to nearly any population, from children to seniors, and to nearly any special interest group.
What is the Instructor Certification Training?
The Instructor Certification Training is a professional skills training that prepares qualified individuals to teach the Journal to the Self curriculum, or facilitate groups using its methods, in their own communities.
Home Study or Intensive?
The ICT is offered in two formats:
- Home-study, in which all learning is undertaken via written material and audiotape or internet-based learning, and
- A four-day intensive directly with Kathleen Adams in Denver, which includes a practice teaching component, a full day of marketing and business development, other interactive learning, and community with peers from around the US and the world.
The fee for a two-year certification is $750 for home-study and $950 for the intensive. The cost of the intensive includes materials to complete Stage 1 of the course via home study prior to August 2007.

How Long Does It Take?
Although the home-study course is self-paced, we expect everyone to be complete within 6 months of acceptance of application, and we encourage everyone to complete it within 90 days. The Intensive is complete in four consecutive days of training (arrive Sunday evening, leave Thursday around noon). The 2007 Intensive will be held August 5-9 at the Loretto Spirituality Center, Denver, Colorado.
Space in the 2007 Intensive will be strictly limited to 20 and will be on a first-come basis. You are strongly encouraged to submit your application and deposit for the Intensive well in advance of the June 15 application deadline.

The Difference Between a Certified Instructor and a Journal Therapist
Although many Certified Instructors
hold graduate degrees and work as counselors or psychotherapists,
you do not need to be a psychotherapist or helping professional
to become a Certified Instructor and teach the Journal to the Self® workshop.
But even if you are already trained as a psychotherapist, this program
does NOT prepare you to be, or call yourself a journal therapist.
If you are interested in becoming a journal therapist,
that is a much different training program, administered
through the National Federation for Biblio/Poetry Therapy.
For comparison,
the Journal to the Self® instructor training is 30
hours of training. The Certified Poetry/Journal Therapist
(CPT) is 440 hours of training; the Registered Poetry/Journal Therapist
(PTR) is 975
hours of training. This program, and the hours of experience
you generate as an instructor, can count toward your credential as a journal
therapist
but as you can see, it is a small part of what you would
actually need to become trained as a journal therapist. Kathleen Adams
is an approved
Mentor/Supervisor of CPT/PTR trainees and in 2007 will
launch a new 250-hour certificate program as a Certified Journal Facilitator.
Please let us
know if you are interested in any of these programs. .
NBCC-Approved Continuing Education; CPT Prerequisite and/or Didactic Credit
The Instructor Certification Training program is approved for continuing
education credit for LPCs, NCCs and other licensed psychotherapy
professionals through the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC).
For a modest
additional materials and administrative fee, and upon completion
of all NBCC evaluation and testing requirements, you may receive up to
30 hours
(home study) or 46 hours (Intensive) of NBCC-approved continuing
education credit.
If you are in training as a certified applied poetry
facilitatior
(CAPF), certified poetry/journal therapist (CPT) or registered
poetry/journal therapist (PTR), the home-study ICT counts as 30 didactic
hours and the
Intensive counts as 36 didactic and 8 peer hours.

Fee for Instructor Certification Training
The Journal to the Self® Instructor Certification Training is a professional training that is designed specifically to enhance income-producing capacity. The fee for training is a one-time fee that is not subject to payment of additional royalties, percentages of income or commissions. It is completely reasonable to expect to earn this fee back within your first two or three Journal to the Self® classes (based on a per-person fee of $100 paid by 4-6 students per class) or, if you are a psychotherapist, your first 4-6 weeks of a facilitated journal group (based on 6 people paying $40 per 90-minute group). Once you have repaid yourself for the cost of the training, all income is 100% yours with no hidden costs or charges. The only additional required cost for the first two years of unlimited teaching is the purchase, at wholesale, of one Journal to the Self® Workbooks for each student you teach. Individual or group telecoaching and other business development tools are optional services available at reasonable additional costs.
The 2007 fee for the home-study course is $750,and the 2007 fee for the four-day Intensive course is $950 in US funds, payable by check, money order, MasterCard or Visa. The fee is payable as follows: $250 as a nonrefundable deposit when your application is submitted, and the balance when your Letter of Agreement is returned. Other financial arrangements may be made on a case-by-case basis. All payments for the Intensive must be made no later than July 15, 2007.
For international applicants there is a postal surcharge of $50 US or actual postage charges incurred, whichever is higher.
Costs to attend the Intensive (including transportation, lodging and meals) are extra. The Loretto Spirituality Center offers a special conference rate for single rooms with private bath for four nights at $300 or single rooms with semi-private baths at $275/night.
Materials Fee
Certified Instructors are asked to provide a copy of the Journal to the Self® Workbook to each of their students at a cost to the Certified Instructor of $5.50 (or less, in volume) per workbook, which cost can be passed on to the student as a materials fee. At their option, Certified Instructors may also purchase Journal to the Self in minimum quantities of 25 for a 50% wholesale discount (currently $7 per book).
